On June 18, 2024, a Program Council meeting was held at the headquarters of the Energy Regulatory Office (URE) in Warsaw to prepare the program for the 40th edition of the EuroPOWER & OZE POWER Energy Conference, scheduled for November 7-8, 2024. The meeting brought together experts and leaders from the energy sector to discuss key issues related to the future of energy in Poland, covering a wide range of topics from energy transformation to the role of data and technology in the sector.
The discussion, led by the Chairman of the Program Council and Acting President of Polish Nuclear Power Plants, Leszek Juchniewicz, and Piotr Rutkowski, Secretary of the Program Council, began with a discussion of the growing need for cybersecurity in the energy sector. It was emphasized that this aspect is not adequately secured by either companies or the state. The topic of Poland’s energy transformation, focused on the transition from coal to renewable energy sources, was then raised, assessing the current energy mix and the impact of EU climate policy. Key issues were cross-sectoral cooperation, management of the gas and fuel sector, especially in the context of global market changes and rising commodity prices, and the importance of supply stability, LNG infrastructure development, and new technologies and digitalization. The influence of Eastern companies, particularly Chinese ones, and their products on the European market was also noted, and the associated risks were assessed.
The discussion touched on the economic and environmental benefits of using renewable energy sources (RES) and the role of Industry 4.0 and ESG in sustainable development. The key role of data in energy management was also an important topic, with an emphasis on the private sector, security, and system integration.
Nuclear energy was also discussed, focusing on the investment schedule and safety standards. Discussions on the modernization of distribution networks emphasized the need for investment and adaptation of infrastructure to variable energy sources, the use of modern monitoring and automation technologies. In terms of financing the energy transformation, the availability of capital, various sources of financing, and the impact of economic policy and regulations on the implementation of energy projects were discussed.
The importance of energy storage was particularly emphasized by participants, who pointed to its key role in stabilizing power grids and integrating renewable energy sources. This element is becoming increasingly important in the context of the changing energy mix and the growing share of RES.
The social element in the context of the energy transformation was also emphasized, drawing attention to the need to engage local communities and consider their individual approaches. A block dedicated to managing energy surpluses and cybersecurity in the context of prosumers was introduced. The need to improve energy efficiency in the heat sector drew attention to the need for investment, regulatory support, and cooperation between the public and private sectors in decarbonization. The challenges and strategies for protecting the energy sector from cyberattacks were also discussed, with an emphasis on the importance of regulations, new technologies, and cross-sectoral cooperation in ensuring the security of critical infrastructure.
