On November 17-18, 2021, the 34th Europower & 4th OZE Power Energy Conference was held at The Westin Warsaw and online. During the two-day event, almost half a thousand participants listened to substantive speeches and debates with the participation of key representatives of the industry, dealing with the most urgent issues related to the energy sector in Poland.
The conference was officially opened by Anna Moskwa, Minister of Climate and Environment.
“Striving for climate neutrality requires ambitious, consistent actions across all sectors of the economy. At present, it is both electric power engineering, heating, industry, transport, construction and many other sectors that are directly or indirectly affected by this transformation. This requires not only strategic documents, most of which already exist, but also consistent actions and projects implemented (…) in business, design, with its structure and well-assigned responsibility. (…) One of the key documents, in which many projects are hidden, is Poland’s Energy Policy until 2040 – a comprehensive document subject to a long period of work and evaluation. One of the most important challenges today is, of course, transformation, but fair transformation. The concept of fair transformation has been appearing for some time (…).This year in Glasgow it resonated very strongly in the form of a large declaration of just transformation, which we initiated and which we also signed as Poland. A few years ago, in the public debate, this concept was very marginal, today it is one of the basic elements that appears immediately after the word transformation. While, of course, transformation gives us extraordinary prospects and opportunities to develop the achievement of climate neutrality, technological transformation, in this transformation process we must not forget about those who may become victims of this transformation, so it should be carried out in such a way that there was no such groups and such people.” – said Minister Moskwa during the opening of EuroPOWER.
During the inaugural debate, experts discussed the energy transformation strategy and the pursuit of climate neutrality. Issues related to, among others, sustainable development, climate neutrality and challenges related to ensuring the security of energy supplies were discussed.
As part of the 34th Europower & 4. OZE Power Energy Conference, two awards were presented:
an honorable mention for PGNiG Obrót Detaliczny sp.z o.o. for his contribution to the development of the digital economy – the award was received by Henryk Mucha, President of the Management Board,
an honorable mention for Minister Jacek Ozdoba, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Climate and Environment, for taking action in the area of system heating, the issues of which were given due priority for the first time, by establishing a dedicated Department of Heating within the Ministry of Climate and Environment.
During subsequent panels, renewable energy was analyzed in the context of the development and competitiveness of the Polish economy. Issues concerning, among others, social and economic potential of renewable energy sources, increased greenhouse gas reduction targets, the use of hydrogen in energy and transport, the Offshore Sector Deal and the development of large photovoltaic farms. There were also issues related to the Polish energy mix as well as the modernization and expansion of distribution networks.
The second day of the conference covered topics related to the energy and economic potential of Polish wind. The topics discussed include: new regulations for offshore wind farms, challenges in creating a supply chain for new investments, cooperation between countries in the Baltic and North Sea region. The prospects for the digital transformation of the Polish power industry were also analyzed – the conditions of digital transformation in the energy sector, the use of modern technologies, challenges and benefits related to the implementation of the cloud in energy companies. In subsequent panels, experts focused on the directions of development of hydrogen technologies, modern energy enterprises, issues related to civic, local and distributed energy, as well as systems and regionalization of energy transformation support.
